Basildon Research Unit

The Basildon research teams are resident in the Robert Brown Post-Graduate centre and the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre, at the Basildon Hospital

Today our research teams support a range of interventional and observational studies across a wide range of specialities.

The ECTC is a driver of cardiovascular and thoracic research across the region and is developing as an internationally recognised research unit, exploring:

  • interventional cardiology
  • cardiac electrophysiology
  • cardiovascular and thoracic surgery
  • perfusion
  • anaesthetics.

Our units are staffed by GCP trained research nurses, research fellows and clinical research practitioners who work collaboratively with clinicians, clinical nurse specialists and allied healthcare professionals. They are able to support participants through their research journey from consent to treatment and/or intervention and follow up.

We are able to support a range of studies from phase two onwards, and have a proven record of delivery of high quality robust clinical trials, gaining recognition particularly for our delivery of Covid-19 studies during the pandemic. This makes us highly sought after by research organisations seeking collaboration.

Clinic rooms

We have two dedicated research clinic rooms at Basildon Hospital.

The rooms provide a space for patients to meet with our research staff to learn more about taking part in research, as well as have some of the assessments done as part of a research visit.

How we can support you

An icon of two interlinked cogs Supporting assets

As well as the physical research space and dedicated staff, we are supported by a number of other assets across our Trust.

The repository is a single place to find all published research authored by staff and students whilst working at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. The aim is to showcase research taking place within the Trust and build confidence with our patients and local population.

Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (MSE ICS) is working to create a Research Engagement Network (REN). The project aims to support under-represented communities to take part in research. It will also provide patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) support to researchers with the aim of increasing diversity in research.
