Occupational health services

Occupational Health at the heart of everything we do

Digital Services

It is often said that your staff are your most valuable resource.

Our occupational health service (OHS) is a genre of medicine specialising in health safety, and wellbeing of people at work. The main goal is to prevent work-related illness and injury, promote employee health, and support organisations in creating safe and healthy workplaces.

Our focus is all about managing and promoting your team’s health and wellbeing at work. It’s not just about keeping people on the job, it’s ensuring they’re fit for their roles and have the support they need to tackle any health risks head-on. By looking after both physical and mental health, we help to create a workplace where everyone can be their best from day to day.

SEQOHS accredited

Our service is approved by SEQOHS (Safe Effective Quality Occupational Health Service) run by the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, which requires excellence in clinical governance to be in place for all staff. This is an external measure of how seriously we take clinical governance in OHS and ensures we are adhering to the highest national standard for occupational health in this regard.

Services we offer

Pre-placement-new starter health screenings: Checking in on the health of new employees to ensure they’re fit for their roles from the start. This helps identify any potential adjustments needed to support their wellbeing, setting them up for success right from day one.

We offer a Preplacement Questionnaire (PPQ) for all new starters.

This is an assessment for you to identify what’s needed for an individual to be employable in a specific role. This could be:

  • health conditions
  • vaccination requirements
  • current fitness level.

Clearances are produced in line with the requirements of the role applied for. For example:

  • Doctors who require Exposure Prone Procedure (EPP) - clearance allows them to conduct operational procedures.
  • Overseas workers would require tuberculosis screening with medical professionals needing vaccines to protect them at work and reduce the risk of potential exposure.

Management referral consultations

If you are a manager and you have concerns about a member of staff’s health, performance due to health implications or level of sickness absence, you can refer them to us for an assessment. We offer both face to face and virtual assessments.

Our investigations and the report that follows will be thorough and objective – we will provide this to the Human Resources (HR) team and/or manager. We can also share this with the member of staff if needed.

We may suggest that reasonable adjustments are introduced because of the consultation, particularly relating to long-term management of medical conditions. We will support both the employer and the member of staff throughout their career.

Blood tests and screening

A gloved hand holding four blood vials.

To make sure your staff are safe we will take antibody blood tests and active/latent tuberculosis (TB) screening.

These will be offered to new starters if they have not undertaken all of their required childhood vaccines or if they are from overseas.

All samples are assessed in a UK accredited laboratory and reported to us. Once we have the result, we will be able to suggest if the member of staff needs to be vaccinated or if any other measures are needed.

Positive results

If you have TB, you may be asked to have an x-ray. A referral to the appropriate service will also be made to appropriately manage and monitor your wellbeing.

If you have positive blood borne viruses (BBV), you will be monitored closely throughout your career with routine blood samples being collected on a regular basis.

Immunisations and vaccinations

Various roles will need different vaccines dependant on their role and exposure possibilities.

We give the following immunisations:

  • Hepatitis B per dose (standard course of 3)
  • Hepatitis B Booster

  • Hepatitis A and B combined

Protect your workforce from flu!

Each year we promote the national campaign to highlight the importance of protecting patients, colleagues and family from influenza (flu).

Governance and assurance protocol

Clinical governance is a systematic approach to maintaining and improving the quality of patient care.

The term was first used within the National Health Service (NHS) and became important in health care to address the variations in standards of care across the UK.  It can be considered under the following:

A framework through which health organisations are accountable for continually improving the quality of their services and safeguarding high standards of care, by creating an environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish.

This definition is intended to embody three key attributes:

  1. recognisably high standards of care
  2. transparent responsibility
  3. accountability for those standards with consistent changes of improvement.
