Acute Oncology Service (AOS)

The Acute Oncology Service (AOS) review patients who present to hospital with a pre-existing cancer diagnosis and are acutely unwell either due to the cancer or due to complications from treatment such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy or radiotherapy.

We support medical teams in advising on diagnostic pathways for patients who have a new cancer diagnosis.

Oncological emergencies can include:

  • Metastatic spinal cord compression
  • Neutropenic sepsis
  • Hypercalcaemia
  • Superior vena cava obstruction.

Service provision

Each team has clinical nurse specialists (CNS) at each site.

However, there is a slightly different provision of services depending on what hospital site you are being treated at.

Basildon

We aim to see patients within 24 hours of admission. We liaise directly with the on call acute oncology team providing specialist input and advice for the treating team and signposting to relevant services.

We update information regarding the acute admission to the treating Oncologist. We can also identify patients requiring specialist palliative care input.

Broomfield

We advise departments for acute oncology admission offering support and advocate for patients and their families during the admission.

We liaise between the ward team and the patient’s oncologist and will ensure patients get support in the community when they are discharged from a hospital admission ensuring urgent needs and support are provided.

Southend

We have two oncology/haematology wards based at Southend Hospital.

We assess and review patients ensuring face-to-face advice and support are given to ward and department teams regarding the care and needs of patients.

We liaise and refer to palliative care teams when needed. We support patients at the time of admission and ensure efficient and timely updates are relayed to the patients own Oncology teams.
