Hospital shining stars standout as they make the shortlist for annual awards event

2024 Shine awards winners with Michael J Fitch and Matthew Hopkins

Exceptional staff from hospitals in mid and south Essex have been named finalists in their Trust’s annual awards event.

Staff working at Basildon, Braintree, Broomfield, Southend, Orsett and St Peter’s hospitals, have been shortlisted across nine categories for their continuing achievements for patients who receive care at the Trust.

Now in its fifth year, the Shine Awards recognise individuals and teams who go the extra mile to improve patient care, lead with compassion, and bring innovation into their work.

This year saw an incredible 455 nominations – from frontline staff to behind-the-scenes teams – all showcasing the passion and dedication at the heart of the Trust. Just 27 finalists made the shortlist, carefully chosen by a panel of judges that included staff and patients.

Matthew Hopkins, Chief Executive at the Trust, said: “Each year, the quality of nominations goes from strength to strength, and this year we received over 400, a testament to the dedication of our teams. I’m continually amazed by the successes our staff achieve every day in supporting patients, their families and each other. The Shine Awards highlight the real impact our people have and being named a finalist is a true mark of excellence.”

Emma Sweeney, Deputy Chief Nursing Officer and Director of Nursing at Basildon Hospital and a member of the judging panel, said: “I have felt extremely privileged being a judge this year, being involved really highlights how talented and dedicated the staff working at our hospitals are. It was great to read about the incredible work happening every day – and even better to help shine a light on some of the people making it happen.”

Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony this autumn.
