Young patient buys new gaming gear for burns ward
A grateful former burns patient has donated a brand-new PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and games to Broomfield Hospital’s Children’s Burns ward, inspired by the amazing care he received.
Seth Petterson, aged 10 from Norfolk, suffered bad burns to both of his feet and underwent skin graft treatment, receiving specialist care from the burns team. He spent five nights on the ward, followed by several outpatient appointments.
His dad, Adam, said: “Seth was looked after amazingly by the team on the ward, and what was an horrific situation was made considerably better by the care and support he received. While on the ward, Seth had access to an Xbox and television, which made a big difference.
“The staff on the ward are incredible, so much so that on Seth’s last visit for physio he asked if he could stay one more night, as he enjoyed the attention and laughter they all provided.”
Inspired by the games console provided during his recovery, Seth decided he wanted to help other young patients. With the support of family, friends and colleagues, he and his parents raised £1,000, allowing them to buy the new consoles and games for the ward.
Tanya Bradd, Senior Sister of the Children’s Burns ward, said: “Seth’s generosity is truly heart-warming. The consoles he has donated will make a huge difference to children on our ward. Play and distraction are vital parts of recovery, and Seth’s gifts will bring comfort, joy and a sense of normality to so many young patients.”
The donation came through Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity, which is proud to support incredible gestures like Seth’s, helping enhance patient experiences across Basildon, Broomfield and Southend hospitals.
