Teen raises thousands with online auction after losing uncle to Covid
A teenager and his family have smashed their fundraising target for Southend Hospital, in memory of their much-loved uncle who died from coronavirus.
Liam Clark, 16, who is a year 11 student at King Edmund School in Rochford, set up a fundraising page and completed an online auction of donated items, with the aim of raising £250.
The teen, from Great Wakering, saw that target spiral to a massive £3,095.
It’s all in memory of George McGhie, of Rackenford, Shoebury, who passed away at the age of 82 in Southend Hospital in January. The money raised will all be going to Rochford Ward at Southend Hospital, where Liam’s uncle was admitted.
Liam said: “Uncle George was taken care of by the wonderful doctors and nurses on Rochford Ward so I just wanted to give something back.
“My original target of £250 was reached so quickly due to everyone's generosity – I’m overwhelmed. Everyone who has helped has done my uncle proud.”
Anne Groome, ward manager of Rochford Ward, said: “We’re so grateful for this donation and the money raised will allow us to buy equipment that will benefit our patients.”
