Refurbished hospital lecture theatre renamed after former consultant

A revamped hospital lecture theatre has opened its doors, helping improve training and lead to better patient care.

The Kevin Lafferty Theatre, which is at Basildon Hospital, was named after Kevin Lafferty, a former Consultant General Surgeon, who alongside his colleagues funded the original theatre.

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust Chief Executive, Matthew Hopkins, joined Mr Lafferty at a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the new and improved theatre. It is an area where staff can come together to share knowledge and improve medical practices.

Matthew said: “We are committed to supporting our staff to develop their careers with us. I’m pleased we’ve been able to invest in improving our training and development facilities, which will only lead to improved patient care.”

The newly opened space now features a new audio-visual system, including a Bluetooth hearing loop which will provide trainees with additional support if needed.

Kevin Lafferty said: “It’s great to see the old lecture theatre back in action and I’m really glad that I was invited to open it. The theatre looks really good, and I am honoured that it is named after me.”
