Pizzas are delivering a slice of normality to children’s wards

Pizzas are being delivered to children’s wards at Basildon Hospital

Pizza nights are on the menu for a special treat on children’s wards at Basildon Hospital.

It’s all made possible through the generosity of Florentina’s Footsteps Foundation, who, with community support, donate pizzas each Friday for young patients and their families whilst in hospital.

The Friday food treat has already become a firm favourite amongst patients and their families at Broomfield Hospital. They said that receiving a pizza brings a smile during difficult days and helps relieve both emotional and financial strain.

Lisa Kawa-Akenbo, Lead Health Play Specialist at the Trust, said: “Florentina’s Footsteps has been incredible in the support they’ve provided to our patients and families already through their pizza nights at Broomfield.

“We are thrilled and deeply grateful that this wonderful initiative is now being extended to Basildon Hospital, and we are looking to bring it to Southend soon as well.”

Feast Fridays were created in honour of Florentina, who passed away in November 2024 at just seven years old following a diagnosis of stage 4 high‑risk neuroblastoma.

Diagnosed just days before her fourth birthday, Florentina underwent intensive treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital, including chemotherapy, stem cell therapy, surgeries, radiotherapy and immunotherapy.

Her strength and spirit inspired her mum, Amelia, to set up Florentina’s Footsteps Foundation in 2025, ensuring Florentina’s legacy continued with purpose to share the joy, happiness and love which made her such a special little girl.
