Patient care celebrated as hospital staff ‘Shine’ bright at awards

Hospital staff delivering excellent care and improvements for patients have been celebrated at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust’s annual awards ceremony.
The Shine Awards, now in their fifth year, saw 27 exceptional finalists – narrowed down from an impressive 400 nominations – across nine categories, covering everything from Patient Champion to Improving Value and Outstanding Achievement awards.
Matthew Hopkins, Chief Executive of the Trust, said: “Celebrating the successes of our finalists and winners never fails to remind me of the pride and passion that drives our teams across our hospitals.
“This event is one of the highlights of the Trust’s year and it’s fantastic to see so many nominations – a clear sign of how meaningful these awards continue to be - and what a real difference our staff make to the lives of our patients.”
The ceremony took place at Stockbrook Manor in Billericay, sponsored by Grosvenor Facilities Management, Cloud21, Laser Electrical, and Softcat, where winners took to the stage to collect their awards in front of colleagues and peers.
Those included The Patient Champion award sponsored by Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity, which went to the care support workers and assistant practitioners on Wagtail ward at Basildon Hospital.
They helped provide outstanding care to a child with complex needs over a challenging 10-week period, giving them a sense of normality during their extended time in hospital.
One of the team, said: “It’s great for the whole team to be recognised for their dedication and compassion to our patients. Our one-to-one support shows the positive impact we have on individual patients and their families.”
Winner of the Rising Star award, sponsored by Morgan Sindall Construction, was Holly Linford, a newly qualified physiotherapist at Broomfield Hospital, who has quickly become an integral member of the burns and plastics team.
She said: “This award is a real surprise, but I’m thrilled my focus on delivering the highest quality rehabilitation care and helping critically unwell patients to regain their independence has been recognised. I’d like to think I have a compassionate approach and always go that extra mile for my patients.”
Winner of the Making a Difference award, sponsored by Broomfield Village Care Home, was the Stroke unit at Broomfield Hospital. A patient’s family nominated the team for the exceptional care they gave their father, valuing the way his dignity was protected at all times and emphasised the team’s respect and compassion. They were also nominated for the end of life care they gave a young mum, and the empathy they showed to her family.
Bonnie Slade, said: “We are so proud to be taking home this award, as a team we pull out all the stops to make sure patients and relatives feel at ease and are able to spend quality time together, at what is often one of the most difficult and challenging times in their lives.”
Dr Andy Wood, OBE, Chair of the Trust, who also presented an award at the event, said: "What stood out to me wasn’t just the impressive achievements, but the powerful stories behind them. Stories of dedication, compassion and quiet determination – often carried out without expectation of praise. It was a heartfelt reminder of the values that truly define our teams.”
