A scheme that helps residents to start work and gain skills in healthcare has won a national award following its nomination by local Members of Parliament.

A glittering awards evening celebrating the great and the good of hospital staff, there couldn’t have been a more perfect date for it than on the 75^th birthday of the NHS.

Amanda Dixon is a Lead Midwife for the Labour Ward at Broomfield Hospital, she began her nurse training 36 years ago and she has been lucky enough to work alongside her daughter, Kira Price-Dixon, who is also a registered nurse and has worked within gynaecology and maternity and is now a Clinical Nurse Specialist with the Breast Care team.

Mum and daughter, Sue Thomson and Louise Chapman from Chelmsford, both work in Radiology at Broomfield Hospital. They don’t just work at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust as part of the Trust family, but very much feel part of the wider NHS family.

Katy and Michael Noakes first met at Basildon Hospital, and are now married, and even Katy’s mum and dad work at the same hospital site!

Jan Drury, 60, from Leigh-on-Sea has been working as a Healthcare Assistant (HCA) at Southend Hospital for 25 years and was the first person in her family to work in the NHS. But now her daughter, Stacey, is also an HCA in another part of the hospital – a role she has enjoyed for the last four years – and Stacey’s eldest daughter is about to head to university to begin her paramedic training.

A drop in event on 20 July has been organised at Braintree Town Hall to share plans with the public about the Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) being built at the St Michael’s Hospital site in Braintree.

We are working to improve our estate to ensure that patients are being treated in safe and modern surroundings.

Several initiatives to support better feeding and nutrition in our hospitals have been implemented to improve quality of patient care.

This week is Learning Disability Week (19-25 June) and young people with learning disabilities or autism have been gaining valuable work experience thanks to a scheme at the Trust.
