Over £9m for greener, cleaner lighting across hospitals
Hospitals are ‘switched on’ to environmentally friendly improvements after they were awarded £9.2m to help reduce energy use.
The money will be used by the Trust to improve existing external, internal and theatre lighting with new LED lighting, so that it is more energy efficient.
It will also help to reduce the Trust’s environmental impact, bring down bills and create savings that can be reinvested into frontline services.
The improvement scheme will take place across the Trust, including Basildon Hospital, Broomfield Hospital - including St Andrew’s Burns Centre - Southend Hospital, Braintree Hospital, Orsett Hospital, and St Peter’s Hospital.
Lauren Barnard, Executive Director of Corporate Governance at the Trust, said: “It’s a real boost to the Trust to have secured £9.2 million in efficiency initiative funding - the largest award in the region. This means we’ll be able to roll out 15 energy initiatives right across our sites, making us even greener and more cost effective.
“These improvements, which are expected to be completed by this autumn, will help us deliver cost savings of £1.6m a year, energy savings of nine gigawatts of power per hour, and an emissions reduction of an estimated 1,598 tonnes of carbon dioxide. That means our energy will cost less and those savings will be spent on patient care.”
