New equipment to help mums with tears after giving birth

A new machine is helping to improve the lives of women at Southend Hospital who have suffered tearing during labour.

The Anopress is a portable, state-of-the-art machine that helps measure pressure to provide treatment of these tears, and has already made a real difference since it was introduced at Southend’s Perineal Trauma Clinic.

Previously, women had to receive a time-consuming examination in a special room, the equipment was large and two clinical assessments had to be performed on a separate date.

That’s now a thing of the past, since the introduction of this compact and mobile £5,000 device which means tests can be done by the bedside on the same day as the clinic appointment, making it a one-stop clinic for those needing it.

Nidhi Tripathi, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, said: “This little device is making a huge difference to the women who attend our clinic. It’s a far more comfortable experience for them and the tests are over a lot more quickly.

“Thank you to Southend Hospital Charitable Foundation for making it a reality and helping change women’s lives for the better.”

Bandipalyam Praveen, consultant surgeon, added: “It now means we can get assessments and results on the same day so that we can plan further treatments without any delay.

“There has been very positive feedback from hundreds of grateful patients regarding this service and the impact it has had on their lives.”

Southend Hospital has been a pioneer in the management of this condition and since the clinic’s opening in 2008, more than 500 women have benefitted from the service.
