Mum’s charity walk is thanks to chemo team that saved her life

Walk for ward participant Jessica Ingle-Wood and her daughter Dorothy

A mum from Rayleigh, who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer, is taking part in Mid and South Essex Hospital Charity’s Walk for Wards, to thank the staff in Southend Hospital’s Chemotherapy unit for her life-saving care.

Jessica Ingle-Wood, 34, will be walking the 7km seaside route on Sunday 21 September, and like everyone else, is doing it in honour of a ward or service close to their heart.

In April 2023 she discovered a lump in her breast and was quickly referred to Southend’s Breast clinic, and after scans and a biopsy, Jessica was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer.

An exhausting journey followed, including 16 rounds of chemotherapy with immunotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, followed by further immunotherapy. But, in early 2024, Jessica was given the all clear from cancer and through it all, she had the unwavering support of the incredible staff at Southend Hospital.

Jessica said: “The team on the chemo unit will always have a place in my heart for being so supportive and amazing through the toughest time of my life, they were always so reassuring.

“When I saw registrations had opened for Walk for Wards, and that you could pick which ward to donate to, it made me want to take part even more! It felt like another way that I could say thank you to the unit that saved my life.”

Walk for Wards, which starts and finishes outside Adventure Island – who are also sponsors of the event - is more than just a walk, it’s a celebration of local hospitals, their staff and the care provided. Fancy dress is encouraged, alternatively charity t-shirts are available to buy during registration or on the day.

Entry is free, with a minimum fundraising goal of £25. All proceeds go directly to the ward, department, or appeal of those taking part’s choice.
