Hospital team first in Essex to get ‘gold-standard’ care recognition

A specialist respiratory rehabilitation team have been recognised by the Royal College of Physicians for their high-quality care for patients with long-term lung conditions.

The team at Southend Hospital is now one of only 25 services across the country and the first in Essex to receive this prestigious accreditation.

Jenny Gates, Clinical Lead for Therapy Services at the Trust, said: “Being the first in the county to be awarded this is an amazing success and is down to the fantastic hard work of everyone in the team.

“For patients, it means they can be reassured they’re being cared for by a nationally recognised team using gold-standard practices that meet the British Thoracic Society Quality Standard.”

This recognition follows an 18-month assessment process carried out by experts in pulmonary care as part of the accreditation scheme. It involved a full-day visit to the hospital, where the team’s work was observed and patients and staff were interviewed by the assessors.

The service will now be reviewed annually to make sure the team maintain these high standards.
