Hospital suite renamed in memory of consultant
A specialised clinic room has been renamed in honour of a consultant who worked in obstetrics and gynaecology at Basildon Hospital for over 30 years.
Its Colposcopy Suite, which is used for further testing after an abnormal cervical screening result, has a new name - The Mike Ekong Suite, in honour of Michael Umana Ekong.
He retired in 2021, returning to support Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust’s elective caesarean section service, reflecting his dedication to women’s health. He sadly died in January 2024.
Mr Ekong was widely respected and was a trusted colleague, mentor, and compassionate clinician whose positive impact was felt by both staff and patients.
The renaming ceremony was attended by colleagues, friends and family, including Mr Ekong’s wife, Dr Rosemary Ekong. She said: “Renaming this suite in Mike’s honour ensures his dedication to the NHS, his care for patients, and his connection with colleagues will never be forgotten. He would have been incredibly humbled by this recognition.”
Professor Rotimi Jaiyesimi, Associate Medical Director for Patient Safety and a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Trust, said:
Mike was well known for his calm expertise, and he was the trusted ‘go‑to’ clinician for colleagues. He trained generations of doctors and nurses, nurturing confidence and offering patient guidance.
