Hospital staff make Netflix debut in new medical documentary

Staff from Broomfield Hospital and Southend Hospital will soon be seen on Netflix in a new factual TV series, joining the platform’s growing collection of real-life medical documentaries, with a spotlight on the London Major Trauma System, its patients, and the professionals working to save lives.
‘Critical: Between Life and Death’, which drops on Netflix globally on Wednesday 23 July, follows the decision making of the dedicated trauma teams that hold our lives in their hands when the worst happens.
Focused on the London Major Trauma System, of which Southend Hospital is a part, the Southend ED team and Broomfield’s Plastics team are featured as one of several hospitals that appear over the six-part series.
Two episodes of the medical documentary series feature Southend Hospital, with dedicated staff from Broomfield Hospital in a larger role as they race to reattach a finger of a young patient, using both state-of-the-art procedures and leeches!
Matthew Hopkins, Chief Executive of the Trust, said: “Programmes like this give a real insight into some of the truly amazing work our staff at the Trust do day-in and day-out for our patients. It’s fantastic to see them at the centre of two episodes of such a powerful and exciting series that will see NHS staff showcase their caring, skills and dedication to saving lives to a global audience.”
From the makers of the award-winning ‘24 Hours in A&E’ and with exclusive access, 40 cameras filmed for 21 days across the entire London Major Trauma System.
The documentary series looks over the shoulder and under the scalpel to reveal not only the life-saving interventions but also the personal, emotional, and sometimes traumatic responses of people, that inspire those on the NHS frontline to work in an environment where every second counts.
