Golden anniversary gig hits the high note for Broomfield Hospital
A packed hall in Burnham saw a 50th anniversary gig raise the roof and £1,070 for a local hospital ward, who gave excellent care to one of its founding members.
Celebrating half a century of music, the evening was organised by The Mays, a band formed by brothers from Dengie, to honour Michael May, their drummer, who died of cancer in 2019 after receiving care on the Heybridge ward at Broomfield Hospital.
The hospital staff who cared for Michael, struck a real chord with his brother, Julian, and the band wanted to give something back as a thank you.
Julian May, 67, said: “The care was excellent from the ward team, so we wanted to show our gratitude in the best way we knew how – through music.
“I still love playing. It’s what we’ve always done – and it’s great to do it for a cause that means so much to us.”
The gig at Burnham Village Hall drew around 80 family members, friends and fans, and featured two members of T-Bone Steak – the band that inspired The Mays in the 1970s.
Clair Dade, Fundraising Coordinator for Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity, said: “We are deeply grateful to Julian, his band, and everyone who supported this wonderful concert. Their generosity in donating the money to Heybridge ward is truly inspiring. Thank you for turning your music and memories into a lasting impact for our patients at Broomfield Hospital”.
