Critical care patients can now benefit being outdoors, thanks to a new garden space that has opened at Broomfield Hospital.

Raised planters, shrubs, sculptures and benches allow families to spend time with their loved ones in a relaxing and safe outdoor environment.

And it is already having quite the positive impact on patients who are spending time in critical care, as Benedict Punchard, senior charge nurse, explained.

He said: “The garden lets patients have time away from the clinical area, so they are without the constant sound of beeps and telephones.

“They can meet family, friends and even their pets outside; the positive impact it has on their mental wellbeing is immeasurable. I feel really proud that we have this space for our patients, and we can now use getting outside as a goal in recovery.”

The garden also contains electrical points for medical equipment and a medical gas storage area, meaning patients can be easily supported outside the ward.
