Football fever and Wimbledon-mania spread across hospital wards
World in Motion may have been New Order’s England footy anthem, but for Essex hospital patients it’s wards in motion as they enter a mini summer of sport inspired by the World Cup and Wimbledon.
The initiative is taking place over the next six weeks across Basildon, Southend and Broomfield hospitals, with the goal of supporting patients to stay active, maintain strength and protect their wellbeing during their time in hospital.
Judy Harper-Bright, Associate Director of Nursing for Ward Management and Outpatients, said:
Ward teams have adapted each activity to suit different levels of mobility so that everyone who wants to join in can. The result has been a noticeable lift in mood, with patients cheering one another on and rediscovering the joy of gentle movement.
Designed to give boredom the boot, and keep their bodies and minds active, patients are taking part in football-themed challenges, Wimbledon-style rallies, light weights sessions, cycling activities and lively table games, including bingo and guess the footballer.
Alan Bass, 77, has been getting involved in the activities on Writtle ward at Broomfield Hospital. He said: “It brings a bit of genuine fun into the day, not just for us as patients but for the staff too. It lifts everyone’s spirits, and we’re all enjoying each other’s company.”
The sporting theme has also helped spark conversation, with patients sharing memories of old sports events they watched, favourite players, and their own related stories - moments of connection that are just as valuable as the physical activity.
