Festive lights shine bright at local hospitals
Christmas sparkles have returned to Basildon, Southend and Broomfield hospitals, where young patients took centre stage to switch on the tree lights.
Each event was a joyful gathering of staff, families and local community, filled with carols and festive spirit.
Children who are receiving care at the three hospital sites were chosen by the play team for this prestigious honour. At Basildon Hospital, five-year-old Cassandra-Maria Nasuiescu lit up the tree with a big smile as she pressed the button.
Her dad, Lauriam-Eduard, said: “Watching her laugh and enjoy the celebration after such a difficult time has meant the world to us. We’re deeply grateful to the staff for their kindness and support.”
Broomfield Hospital’s celebration saw three-year-old Jacob wowed by the crowd as he turned on the tree lights at the hospital entrance.
His mum, Alex, said: “Jacob’s smile said it all, it was such a joyful moment and seeing everyone cheer made it even more special. Our family would like to thank staff for the care and kindness they’ve shown Jacob.”
At Southend Hospital, seven-year-old Vivienne Parsons stepped up to switch on the lights. She said: “Christmas is my favourite time of the year. I loved being the one to turn on the lights!”
Her mum, Kath, added: “It was such an important moment for Vivienne. Seeing her take part made the evening feel even more special for our family.”
The trees, lights, food and hot drinks were all kindly provided by Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity.
Lucy Thomas‑Clayton, Director of Charities and Voluntary Services at the Trust, said: “Switching on the lights of the Christmas trees is one of my favourite traditions. I’m so pleased we could bring staff, patients and the community together again this year. None of this would have been possible without the dedication of our charity team, who worked hard behind the scenes to organise the trees, decorations and refreshments.”
Throughout December, staff across the Trust are spreading festive cheer by decorating wards and giving gifts to those spending Christmas in hospital.
