Faster help for heart conditions is a UK first
Patients with a serious heart problem have seen a dramatic reduction in waiting times, cutting diagnosis to specialist review from 81 days to a single day.
This unique fast-track system is a UK first and makes sure patients at the world-renowned Essex Cardiothoracic Centre at Basildon Hospital receive help before their condition gets worse.
The condition is aortic stenosis, which is the narrowing of a heart valve which reduces blood flow and makes the heart work harder. If not treated quickly, this can lead to heart failure or other life‑threatening complications.
Mr Ozan Demir, the Consultant Cardiologist leading the service, said: “When a heart scan shows severe narrowing of the valve, the result is sent straight to our specialist team for a rapid initial review and an early appointment. This significantly reduces the time from diagnosis to referral and, where needed, treatment.
“Once we receive the referral, we agree the most appropriate care plan together, which may include a minimally invasive keyhole valve procedure or, for some people, open-heart surgery. If treatment isn’t needed straight away, we provide careful monitoring and planned follow-up.”
One patient who has benefitted is Minette Partner, 90, from Colchester. She said: “When I was told I’d be referred to the specialist team within a day, I couldn’t believe it. The speed of the referral and the clear communication really eased my anxiety at a worrying time, and I felt safe in their capable hands.”
This model has already helped over 200 patients and has been such a success it is now set to expand to other regions in England, including the North and West Midlands.
