Dr Andy Wood OBE appointed as new Chair of Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust

A new Chair has been appointed to oversee one of the largest NHS trusts in the country.
The Trust has appointed Dr Andy Wood OBE, who will take up the post from 14 July. He succeeds Nigel Beverley, who is retiring after a 52-year career in the NHS.
Andy brings a wide-ranging background in business and public leadership. As former Chief Executive of Adnams – one of the UK’s most respected regional businesses – he led major transformation, championed environmental leadership, and embedded strong values-based leadership throughout the organisation.
He has held senior roles in the NHS, including interim Chair of Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn and Non-Executive leadership positions across both acute and community health providers. He also brings experience from local government, higher education, and the charitable sector.
Dr Wood said: “It’s a real honour to be joining Mid and South Essex at such an important moment. Serving 1.2 million people and employing over 17,000 staff, the Trust plays a vital role in the life of this region.
“The commitment of staff and the ambition outlined in the new 10-year strategy are both inspiring. I’m excited to be part of the team and to work with colleagues, partners, and communities to deliver great care and build a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future.”
Matthew Hopkins, Chief Executive, said: “Andy is an outstanding appointment. His leadership experience across business, health, and the wider public sector will be invaluable as we deliver our strategy and continue to improve care for our population.”
