Consultant receives top honour for global radiology training impact
A consultant from Basildon University Hospital has been recognised for his exceptional contribution in the field of radiology.
Dr Sami Ullah Khan was awarded the Royal College of Radiologists Gold Medal, the highest recognition given to a Fellow of the College, for his continuing work in radiology education.
In 2020 he launched a free online platform, Dr Khan's Teaching (DKT), that gives trainees around the world access to radiology learning, regardless of where they live or work.
It helps doctors prepare for Royal College of Radiologists examinations and supports international radiologists to gain qualifications and integrate into the NHS, helping to strengthen the workforce and support patient care.
By July 2026, DKT had reached 15,395 members across 131 countries and delivered 1,245 hours of teaching to more than 174,000 attendees worldwide. It’s supported by volunteer consultants, resident doctors and specialist registrars from the UK and overseas, with many of the volunteers based at Basildon, Broomfield and Southend hospitals.
Recognising its impact, Royal College of Radiologists President Dr Stephen Harden said DKT had "transformed radiology training across the globe" and earned Dr Khan a respected reputation among trainees and radiologists worldwide.
Dr Khan, who trained in Pakistan and has more than 34 years of clinical and teaching experience, has spent much of his career supporting radiology trainees through teaching, mentoring and educational programmes.
Of his prestigious award, he said:
I am deeply honoured to receive the RCR Gold Medal. Teaching has always been a passion of mine and it has been a privilege to support radiology trainees throughout their careers.
DKT was built on teamwork, volunteers and a shared belief that high-quality radiology education should be available to everyone, wherever they are. We hope to continue supporting radiology trainees around the world through free education.
