Connect floors: outside of new Southend Hospital building is complete

The final exterior section of the new modular building at Southend Hospital has been craned into place.

Like a giant LEGO set, the building has had joining interconnected sections moved into place and secured together as it has taken shape over the last couple of months.

There's still lots of work to do on the inside and exterior of the building before it is ready to welcome patients and staff.

The new permanent build will start opening to patients from April. It will include same-day emergency care facilities on the ground floor, a trauma and surgical assessment unit on the first floor and a patient discharge lounge on the second floor.

It’s part of a range of improvement works that are underway at Southend, Basildon and Broomfield hospitals to help tackle the pressures of the Covid-19 pandemic and people arriving at their local hospital needing emergency care.
