Concert raises nearly £12,000 for cancer research
A concert has raised almost £12,000 to support local prostate cancer research - the most common cancer affecting men in the UK.
Funds raised by the second annual Music of the World Concert will support pioneering prostate cancer research and innovation at Southend Hospital. It will help to improve treatment options and results for patients now and in the future.
The event brought together hundreds of guests, performers and supporters from across mid and south Essex for a celebratory evening of music and entertainment at the Palace Theatre, Southend.
The concert was organised by Dr Imtiaz Ahmed, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, former urology patient and supporter Trevor Taylor and his wife, Carol. They were supported by volunteers committed to improving care for prostate cancer patients.
Dr Ahmed said:
"The money raised will help us continue vital prostate cancer research, offering hope to patients and their families while helping us develop better treatments for the future. I am incredibly grateful to everyone who supported this year's concert. The generosity of our performers, sponsors, volunteers and audience members has been truly remarkable.”
This year's performances included Cantare, a renowned all-female choir; Rewynd, an emerging young pop and rock band; folk favourites Arfur Do and the Toe Rags; and jazz-funk ensemble C-Level 2.
There was also a celebration of Indian music and culture by Anandadhara Arts. Dr Ahmed performed four semi-classical Indian songs based on a variety of traditional Indian ragas and rhythms.
Lucy Thomas-Clayton, Director of Charities and Voluntary Services at Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity, which supported the event, said:
"We are delighted that the second Music of the World Concert has raised so much money for prostate cancer research.
“Everyone involved has created a truly special evening that brings together music, community and fundraising. A huge thanks to the performers, volunteers, sponsors and guests whose generosity will help support vital research and innovation for patients now and in the future."
