Complex lung patients’ lives boosted by new initiative

The lives of patients undergoing complex lung procedures at the world-renowned Essex Cardiothoracic Centre (CTC) are being improved thanks to almost £4,000 from charitable funds.
Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity recently provided the funds to support and improve outcomes for thoracic patients, both before and after surgery.
The money has provided five smartwatches and two specialist exercise bikes are now benefitting patients on Basildon Hospital’s Chelmer Ward. The new items play an important role in preparing patients physically for surgery and supporting a smoother recovery post-operation.
Thoracic surgery, including cancer procedures and remodelling of lungs in severe emphysema cases – which causes shortness of breath – place a significant strain on the body.
Improving a patient’s lung capacity and physical strength before surgery can make recovery time quicker and reduce complications. Post surgery, a rehabilitation plan helps patients regain their energy and independence much sooner.
Mr Abdullah Badran, Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at the CTC, said: “This is an important initiative as many thoracic patients have damaged lungs from smoking and need to lose some of their lung for treatment. This programme adds a crucial layer of support to improve tolerance to treatment and help speed up recovery for lung cancer patients and those with life threatening emergency conditions.
“These resources go beyond what the NHS is currently able to provide and will help us better monitor and guide our patients through recovery, so we are incredibly grateful.”
Piloted with five patients, the long-term goal is to expand this initiative to a wider group of up to 30 patients – meaning even more people will benefit from this approach to surgical recovery.
