Classic hits brighten the day for elderly patients

Patients on an elderly care ward at Basildon Hospital were treated to a special sing-along this week to mark Dementia Action Week (19-25 May).

Staff at the hospital were joined by colleagues from Alzheimer’s Society as they visited Florence Nightingale ward and sang popular songs for patients living with dementia.

Classic hits including Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond and Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver filled the room as patients, relatives and staff joined in.

The event created a warm and happy atmosphere on the ward, giving patients a chance to relax and connect in a different way.

Jane Gilby, Admiral Nurse at the Trust said: “Music can bring back memories and spark something really special for people living with dementia. We saw faces light up as people recognised the tunes. Some sang every word, while others simply smiled or tapped along.

“It was a simple gesture that made a big difference. A big thank you to our colleagues from Alzheimer’s Society who joined us on the day. Their support meant a lot to both patients and staff.”

The Trust organises a range of events and offers various services to support patients with dementia, their families and carers, including working towards being a Dementia Friendly Trust. For more information, visit the Dementia Services page on the Trust website.
