Braintree Community Diagnostic Centre comes a step closer to opening

A major milestone has been reached in the construction of the new Braintree Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC), with the steel frame for the extension now in place. Residents and staff can now see just how big the centre will be.
Due to open in early 2026 on the site of Braintree Community Hospital, the new CDC will bring much needed local diagnostic services together under one roof. Local residents will be able to access CT and MRI scans, x-rays, ultrasounds, blood tests, and heart and lung checks—making it quicker and easier to get the tests they need, closer to home.
Open seven days a week, Braintree CDC will carry out approximately 75,000 extra appointments every year. This will help reduce waiting times, speed up diagnoses and treatments, and give patients faster access to the right care.
Julie Smith, Managing Director at Broomfield Hospital, said: “Braintree Community Diagnostic Centre will make a real difference for our patients. It means more people will be able to get the tests they need locally, without long delays or the need to travel to larger hospitals. That’s better for patients, our environment and better for the whole health system.”
Councillor Lynette Bowers-Flint, Cabinet member for housing, health and wellbeing at Braintree District Council said: “The development of the Braintree Community Diagnostic Centre marks a significant step forward in improving local healthcare access. This facility will bring vital diagnostic services closer to home, reduce waiting times and ensure our residents receive faster, more efficient care. We are looking forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on our community.”
Once complete, Braintree CDC will be one of four new diagnostic centres serving mid and south Essex, alongside centres in Thurrock, Southend and Pitsea.
Community Diagnostic Centres are part of a national programme funded by the Government to increase diagnostic capacity. These one-stop hubs are designed to provide faster access to checks, tests and scans in the heart of local communities.
