A-May-zing fundraising feat

May pier walk complete

May Hamilton, 82, has completed her Southend Pier challenge, walking over 53 miles up and down the pier for charity.

The Thorpe Bay resident kicked off the fundraiser on her 82nd birthday at the start of June, walking 40 times up and down the world’s longest pleasure pier in the hottest weather we have seen this year.

She was walking the equivalent distance between Southend Hospital, Northwick Park Hospital and St Mark’s Hospital, as these are the three hospitals that have helped May throughout her life and she wanted to give something back to say thank you.

May celebrated completing her epic task with a well-deserved sit down and a Rossi’s ice-cream to help her cool down.

May, who is also a volunteer at Southend Hospital, said: “Eureka! I’ve at last finished my pier walk challenge. Thank you to all who have supported me and made this possible.”
